Act Locally

Inspired by the phrase 'think globally, act locally', I've chosen to put energy (read resources like time and money) into:

Children's House on Orcas (an early childhood education facility) which, like virtually all non-profits anywhere, and certainly here on Orcas Island, is abundant with good will, energy, devotion, dedication, integrity, quality and deficient in funds to enable its mission. If the Centripetus web site offers you any value which (like freeware or shareware or NPR) you don't have to pay for but you'd like to encourage through your support, please send a tax deductible contribution to Children's House.

Challenging San Juan County's comprehensive plan. You might say "whaa?" as most do in contemplating the comprehensive plan of the county in which they live. My guess is that an almost unmeasurably small fraction of citizens of any county even know a comprehensive plan exists, (or ought to exist) where they live, much less have read it, and, should they have made some attempt to read it, and even smaller percentage would understand it. This is certainly the case in the county I live in, which has earned the distinction of having the greatest gap between the haves and the have nots of any county in the country. Given that this county is considered one of the most beautiful spaces in the world, it deserves better treatment than implied in Joni Mitchell's verse: "Don't it always seem to go, you dont' know what you've got til its gone; They paved paradise and put up a parking lot." Does education, civilization, intelligence mean so little? Looking at our response to global warming gives little hope. Nevertheless, big problems were never solved by denial. There is always an opportunity to make your voice heard.

Supporting those who support others, such as automatic monthly contributions to Technoserve, Oxfam, and Finca.

Contributing pottery for fundraising efforts for various organizations, such as Opal, Montessori School, Children's House, Washington Environmental Council, NARAL Pro Choice Washington, Tsubaki America Shrine, Northwest Women's Law Center

Providing a computer to work on various projects when it is not being otherwise used. This is easy, secure, helpful: Berkeley and Stanford are places to start.

This list is intended to suggest, inspire, nudge; it is not here to gild my ego. There may be organizations here you might not know about and wish to support, or ideas here that stimulate your own centripetal urges to bring compassion, joy, gratitude to others.
